Details of the Seminar Topic: ‘Socially Wise Peer Support’

Bullying and teasing at school is a frequently expressed concern by pupils with ASD and their parents.  This can lead to social difficulties and isolation for such pupils leading to stress, anxiety and even depression.  This seminar will describe a peer based approach to supporting young people with social communication difficulties (ASD) in school.  The primary aims of the programme were to develop the peer group’s social understanding of the pupil with ASD and encourage social inclusion.   The ‘Circle of Friends’ approach, as well as an intervention described by Annie Etherington, was used as models to develop this programme.

Specifics:
  • Brief background information about ASD pupils and their difficulties in navigating the social world
